How People Talk to Computers, Robots, and Other Artificial Communication Partners

چکیده
End-to-end evaluations of more conversational dialogue systems with naive users have uncovered severe usability problems that, among other things, result in low task completion rates. First analyses suggest that these problems are related to the system’s dialogue management and turn-taking behavior. This paper starts with a presentation of experimental results, which shed some light on the effects of that behavior. Based on these findings, some criteria which lie orthogonal to dialogue quality are spelled out. As such, they nevertheless constitute an integral part of a more comprehensive view on dialogue felicity as a function of dialogue quality and efficiency. Since the work on spoken and multimodal dialogue systems presented and discussed herein is aimed at more conversational and adaptive systems, we also show that in certain dialogical situations it is important for such systems to align linguistically towards the users. After describing the corresponding empirical experiments and their results, pragmatic alignment will be introduced as more general framework for these types of adaptation to users which are, in the light of the aforementioned studies critical to building more conversational dialog systems.

How People Talk with Robots: Designing Dialog to Reduce User Uncertainty
WINTER 2011 31 Verbal interaction with robots is not characterized by a set of well-defined properties; what users actually say when faced with a robot, especially if they are not engineers or computer scientists, can hardly be predicted. In this article I argue that the peculiarities of human-robot dialogue are best understood as users’ strategies to deal with what they understand the challeng...
متن کاملEditorial: Investigating Human Nature and Communication through Robots
The aim of this research topic was to gather findings and hypothesis on how robotic devices have changed, or may change, ways of communication between people. In the last two decades, people acquired new means for communication; cellphones, e-mail, chat, SNS, and so on. With such communication media, along with the progress in information technologies and devices such as World Wide Web (WWW) an...
متن کاملMulti-robot Cooperation for Human-Robot Communication
This paper illustrates how robots can effectively cooperate to facilitate communication with people. We expect that communication robots will play an important role in our daily life. Although these robots can communicate with each other by radio, infrared, or other invisible means, our results show that it is important to human understanding that they are able to communicate with each other by...
متن کاملSocial Robots 58 . Social Robots that Interact with People
This chapter surveys some of the principal research trends in social robotics and its application to human–robot interaction (HRI). Social (or sociable) robots are designed to interact with people in a natural, interpersonal manner – often to achieve social-emotional goals in diverse applications such as education, health, quality of life, entertainment, communication, and collaboration. The lo...
متن کاملGeminoid: Teleoperated Android of an Existing Person
Why are people attracted to humanoid robots and androids? The answer is simple: because human beings are attuned to understand or interpret human expressions and behaviors, especially those that exist in their surroundings. As they grow, infants, who are supposedly born with the ability to discriminate various types of stimuli, gradually adapt and fine-tune their interpretations of detailed soc...
